O-Rings – Reliable Sealing For Demanding Industry
O-rings by material, size and application
O-rings are among the most commonly used sealing elements in industry, servicing and general maintenance. They are used for static and selected dynamic seals in hydraulics, pneumatics, pumps, valves, gearboxes, vacuum technology and other mechanical applications.
Our range includes O-rings made from NBR, EPDM, FKM, FFKM and VMQ / MVQ materials. Each material has different properties – they differ in temperature range, chemical resistance, and suitability for oils, fuels, water, steam, glycols, vacuum or outdoor use.
When selecting an O-ring, it is important to verify not only the size, but also the material, hardness, operating temperature, medium and type of stress. O-ring size is typically determined by the inner diameter d1 and cross-section d2.

O-Ring Materials and Their Applications
NBR O-Rings
NBR is a common and economical material for industrial sealing. It is primarily suitable for applications with mineral oils, lubricants, fuels and hydraulic fluids. It is used in hydraulics, pneumatics, gearboxes, pumps and general servicing.
Typical applications:
• oils and fuels,
• hydraulics and pneumatics,
• general industrial applications,
• servicing of machinery, pumps and gearboxes.
EPDM O-rings
EPDM is suitable for water, steam, glycols, heating, sanitation and outdoor use. It is highly resistant to weathering, ozone and ageing. However, it is not suitable for mineral oils and fuels.
Typical applications:
• water and glycol,
• heating and sanitation,
• steam depending on specific conditions,
• outdoor applications,
• applications requiring ozone and ageing resistance.
FKM O-Rings
FKM is a material for higher temperatures and more demanding media. It is highly resistant to mineral oils, fuels, lubricants, hydrocarbons, ozone and ageing. It is used in industry, vacuum technology, pumps, valves, engines and gearboxes.
Typical applications:
• oils and fuels,
• higher operating temperatures,
• vacuum technology,
• industrial media,
• service and maintenance,
• pumps, valves and rotary units.
FFKM O-Rings
FFKM is among the most resistant elastomers for extremely demanding applications. It is used where standard materials such as NBR, EPDM, FKM or VMQ are insufficient in terms of chemical and temperature resistance. Typically, this involves aggressive chemicals, high temperatures, vacuum applications and technologically demanding operations.
Typical applications:
• aggressive chemicals,
• extreme operating conditions,
• high temperatures,
• vacuum and semiconductor technology,
• chemical and process industries.
VMQ / MVQ Silicone O-Rings
VMQ / MVQ is a silicone rubber suitable for applications with both high and low temperatures. Silicone is highly resistant to ozone, UV radiation and weathering effects. It is mainly suitable for static sealing where flexibility and stability across a wide temperature range are required. It is not ideal for mineral oils, fuels, high abrasion and dynamic stress.
Typical applications:
• high and low temperatures,
• static sealing,
• outdoor use,
• ozone and UV radiation,
• sanitation, heating, service and maintenance.
Quick Application Guide
For oils, fuels, and hydraulics, NBR or FKM is most commonly used.
For water, glycol, heating, and outdoor use, EPDM is suitable.
For higher temperatures, oils, fuels, and vacuum, FKM is suitable.
For aggressive chemicals and extreme operations, FFKM is suitable.
For a wide temperature range, ozone, UV, and static sealing, VMQ / MVQ is suitable.
What to watch out for
No single material is ever ideal for everything. An O-ring that works well in oil may not be suitable for steam. A material suitable for water may not resist fuels. Silicone handles a wide temperature range but is not ideal for abrasion and dynamic applications. FKM is very good for oils and fuels but is not ideal for hot water and steam.
We recommend verifying the following before purchase:
• dimension d1 × d2,
• O-ring material,
• Shore A hardness,
• operating temperature,
• chemical medium,
• pressure,
• whether it is a static or dynamic application.
